Still there are lots of Kamlaharis, who have not been liberated despite the passage of a decade since the government declared abolishment of the Kamlahari practice, RSS reports.

The Kamlahari practice is a form of debt bondage in which a girl from the local Tharu community are made to work at the homes of the landlords as housemaids for generations.

This system was in practice in Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Kailali, Kanchanpur and Surkhet districts.

According to an NGO, Alliance of Freed Kamlaharis, there are still 1,128 Kamlaharis in these districts.

The NGO said there are 89 Kamlaharis in Banke, 97 in Dang, 256 in Bardiya, 423 in Kailali, 251 in Kanchanpur and 12 in Surkhet who are yet to be freed from their bondage. Nepalnews.com
