Martyr Lakhan Thapa Magar Memorial Foundation has demanded that recognition be given to Lakhan Thapa Magar as the first martyr of Nepal, RSS reports.

It is said that Thapa Magar had gathered the locals of Bungkot VDC, Gorkha, to launch an anti-Rana rule campaign for the first time in the country and the Rana regime had hanged Thapa Magar to death on Falgun 2, 1933 B.S.

Some other people including Jaya Singh Chumi and others were also given death penalty.

The Foundation said that all the democratic movements and the people's sacrifices were the results of the seeds of the democratic movement initiated by Lakhan Thapa.

The Foundation expressed displeasure to the government step of not recognising Thapa as the first martyr, though the State was declaring different people dying in the personal and family enmities as martyrs.

The Foundation also expressed concern over not clarifying the definition of martyr, adding that sacrifices of the real martyrs were overshadowed after other peoples killed in petty incidents were declared martyrs.

The Foundation is scheduled to submit a memorandum to the prime minister on Tuesday on the occasion of the 135th memorial day of Lakhan Thapa. nepalnews.com
