At a time when political leaders and Constituent Assembly members from far-western region have joined forces against the State Restructuring Commission's recommendation to create separate federal states there, lawmakers from eastern region have also started a similar pressure campaign with the demand to turn the eastern development region into a single federal state.

A meeting of some two dozen lawmakers from UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) on Thursday decided to go for a single province comprising the existing 16 districts in the eastern region.

The meeting held at the NC parliamentary party office on Thursday also formed a committee of the lawmakers from eastern districts to start dialogue with various stakeholders over the possibility of a single state.

The SRC in its report passed by the majority of its members has placed the eastern districts in four different states - Limbuwan, Kirat, Tamsaling and Madhes-Bhojpura-Mithila.

However, none of three major parties have made any official statement on the demand of their lawmakers from the eastern region. nepalnews.com
