Former President of Nepal Bar Association (NBA) Biswakanta Mainali on Wednesday urged the Madhesh-based parties not to view the Supreme Court’s verdict on corruption case involving Minister for Information and Communication and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Republican chairman Jaya Prakash Gupta as a decision against Madhesh or Terai centric parties.

Speaking at an interaction organised in the captial this afternoon, he said that corruption related cases should be dealt in the most severe manner to discourage them and warned against politicising the matter so as to engage in politics in the name of region, community, race and ethnicity.

Mainali further said that people involved in massive corruption are not given harsher sentences in Nepal, demanding instead that a 20 year jail sentence should be slapped to anyone found involved in corruption and abuse of authority.

Implying to the one and half year jail term and Rs 8. 4 million fine and property confiscation of same amount slapped to Gupta by the apex court on Tuesday , he said, “If people convicted on murder charge are sentenced to 20 year jail then those who are guilty of destroying the country by acts of corruption and abuse of authority should also be slapped a 20 year jail term.” nepalnews.com
