People in seven Village Development Committees (VDCs) in north of the district are reportedly facing a crisis of rice.

We could not get two meals of rice even on Gyalbo Lhosar festival day, Pemba Thakuri of Proka VDC told state-owned news agency RSS. He said youths returned empty handed from the Sirdibas food depot after it was found without its Chief.

However, the District Food Office, Gorkha has clarified that the Chief left home due to the long public holiday and also as the depot ran out of stock of rice.

The depot has been providing 15 kilograms of rice per family. The demand is for 18,000 kilograms of rice but the Sirdibas depot received only 3,000 kgs, it is learnt from the Office.

Government has been transporting and selling rice to locals in Prok, Lho, Sirdibas, Chekampar, Bihi, Chumchet and other VDCs in the northern remote part of the district.

An additional demand has been made with the Centre and would be sent to the depot soon after additional stock is received, said Chief of Food Corporation in Gorkha, Bhojraj Pandey. nepalnews.com
