Prime Minster Baburam Bhattarai on Thursday inaugurated the Republic Monument to be built in Kirtipur to mark the establishment of republic in the country following the historic changes brought about by the People’s Movement.
“The Republic Monument is now being built in Kirtipur as a symbol of the end of monarchy in the country,” he said, adding that the country will never see the return of monarchy. Laying the foundation stone of the monument, PM Bhattarai said that the construction of the monument has “historic importance” as the Shah dynasty that ruled Nepal for over two centuries had begun with the victory over Kirtipur.
The prime minister said that the erection of Republic Monument is also essential to celebrate the establishment of republic and bind the people of the country in understanding and harmony to create a better, prosperous Nepal.
The monument being erected in an area of 60 ropani at Gamkhel in Kirtipur will cost Rs 1.21 billion and will be completed within three years.
The republic monument, will reflect the country’s diversity of the mountains, hills and terai, and will be tallest such structure in Asia. nepalnews.com
