Sherpas, Karnali people stage protest demanding 'autonomous provinces'

Indigenous Sherpas and people from Karnali staged separate sit-in programmes to exert pressure on the parties and the Constituent Assembly to create provinces with autonomy.

Women from indigenous Sherpa community staging dharna (sit-in) in front of Constituent ...Sherpa community staged dharna in front of Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Lazimpat residence in the morning as part of the pressure campaign. They also met Dahal after the dharna, requesting him to press for adoption of the report of the CA committee on state restructuring which had suggested creation of 'Sherpa autonomous province'.

Speaking to the delegation, Dahal assured of his party's support to to their demand, mentioning that his party, too, was in favour of creating federal states based mainly on identity including that of Sherpas.

The Sherpas community also staged similar dharna in front of the CA building at Baneshwor.

Meanwhile, a group of political leaders and civil society representatives from Karnali region organised dharna at Baneshwor to pressurise the parties to guarantee autonomy to the would-be Karnali province.

Those participating in the dharna said their demand was for 'autonomous Karnali region' instead merely of creating a state that would not be able to function independently. nepalnews.com
