General strikes called by various outfits and organisations have affected life in Chitwan and eastern Nepal districts Morang, Janakpur, and Jhapa on Wednesday.

Joint Struggle Committee comprising Chhetri Samaj Nepal, the Brahman Samaj Nepal, the Khas Kshetriya Ekata Samaj, the Thakuri Samaj Mahasnagh, Nepal Dasnami Samaj, the Bibhed Mukti Pragatisheel Samaj and the Dalit Janajagaran Sewa Sangh have called strike in Biratnagar of Morang district affecting all the sectors including market, transportation, factories, industries, education institutions, among others.

However, it is learnt that the final examination of grade 12 and ambulances, press vehicles are on operation.

In Jhapa, Brahman Samaj Nepal has enforced a strike demanding that Brahmans be also recognised as Janjatis (indigenous nationalities) and removed from the ‘others’ category.

The working of business at main market centers including factories and educational institutions was affected in many parts of the district, as were transport services including, both long and short route passenger buses.

Meanwhile, Mithila State Joint Struggle Committee enforced the shutdown strike in Janakpur of Rajbiraj for the second consecutive day to protest Monday’s deadly blast at Ramananda Chowk that killed four people and injured 30 others.

Cops have been deployed to maintain law and order while most of the private vehicles and public buses and vehicles stayed off the road apprehending trouble.

Factories, educational institutions including shops and businesses also remain closed in Janakpur since early morning due to the general strike.

Similarly, the general strike called by Tharu National Liberation Front demanding a Tharu autonomous state has affected normal life in Chitwan district as well.

There are no reports of any violence or skirmishes from the three districts so far, making it a largely peaceful bandh. nepalnews.com
