The CPN-UML has asked Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to resign from his post immediately.

The UML standing committee meeting held Wednesday evening demanded his resignation saying that resignation before May 27 was the part of five-point agreement reached between the UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and UML together with the Madhesi Front.

The meeting also decided to continue discussions with other political parties for consensus to promulgate new constitution by May 27 deadline, according to  UML secretary Shankar Pokharel.

In the five-point agreement, four parties had agreed to form national unity government under Baburam Bhattarai's leadership and  to handover the government leadership to the NC before promulgating new constitution by May 27.

However, rift has widened between the parties after the government's decision to extend the term of the Constituent Assembly.  Though the government has already tabled constitution amendment bill in the parliament to pave the way for Constituent Assembly's term extension, Nepali Congress and UML have been saying the statute must be drafted by May 27. nepalnews.com
