Normal life in Kathmandu Valley and major towns across the country was affected due to a chakkajam (vehicular shutdown) enforced by CPN (UML) aligned Youth Association Nepal (YAN) across the country on Tuesday.

YAN imposed the vehicular shutdown from 6 am to 10 am in the Valley and across many parts of the country today.  The UML aligned students wing had been imposing the transport strike in Kathmandu Valley since Sunday.

In Kathmandu, both public and private vehicles avoided major roads and thoroughfares till 10 am for fears of attacks by bandh organisers while motorcyclists opted for inner-city roads to reach their destinations.
Office-goers also had difficulty commuting to work due to lack of public vehicles.

YAN activists demonstrating in the streets of Kathmandu since early morning today vandalized four vehicles at different places in the capital for defying the strike.

Meanwhile, schools, colleges and educational institutions running morning classes shifted their classes for the afternoon due to the four hour long chakkajam.

YAN cadres supported by 16 youth wings of various political parties imposed the transportation strike for the third day in a row demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai at the earliest to make way for a new national consensus government.

YAN, which announced the chhakajam as part of its nationwide agitation programme to topple the current government, says it will carry on with the ongoing protests until Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai steps down. nepalnews.com
