The government is preparing to reconstitute the Army Integration Special Committee (AISC), reports say.

AISC was formed by the previous government in order to recommend and facilitate the rehabilitation and integration of the Maoist-affiliated People’s Liberation Army into the Nepal army.

Unified CPN (Maoist) has proposed to reconstitute the committee without changing its leadership. Currently, Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal is the chairman of the committee and the Maoists want to continue with Dahal as the chairman of the AISC.

Nobody understands the Maoist army better than the chairman comrade (Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’), so he should continue becoming the chairman of AISC, said Maoist spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma.

However, leaders of Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML) are for the change of leadership. They want Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to lead the committee.

According to NC vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel, the committee should be led by the Prime Minister as was the case in the past.

It is not appropriate for the Maoist chairman to lead the committee as its main job is about the Maoist army itself, Poudel added. nepalnews.com Jun 29 09
