Nepal Army has recommended the government to upgrade its legal department by creating a position of Major General to head the department, Nagarik daily reported.
At present, a brigadier general heads the department. The recommendation has been made to make the army’s representative at par with other members of the Army Special Court (ASC) in terms of civil service rankings.
The ASC comprises of a judge of an Appellate Court, defense secretary and the head of the army’s legal department. The defense secretary and the appellate court judge both are special class officials, while a brigadier general, the present head of NA’s legal department, is a first class official. A major general, the proposed head of the legal department, is a special class official.
The proposal is not to create a new position, but move the Major General’s position at the erstwhile royal palace to the legal department.
Currently, Brigadier General BA Kumar Sharma heads NA’s legal department. If the proposal is approved by the cabinet Sharma is likely to be promoted to the post of Major General and remain as the head of the legal department. nepalnews.com Jun 30 09
