The meeting was called by the ruling CPN (UML) in order to create a consensus among the parties to end obstruction of the House. Main opposition Unified CPN (Maoist) has been obstructing the House since over a month over the issue of President’s move on army chief’s dismissal.
The Maoists have agreed to allow the proceedings of the parliament if Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal addresses the House terming the President’s move ‘unconstitutional’. Although, UML is seen flexible on the content of the PM’s address, another coalition partner Nepali Congress is against it.
Today’s meeting ended inconclusively after NC and the Maoists remained firm on their stances. The fringe parties suggested the major parties to act responsibly to end the House deadlock. The deadlock of the House is affecting the budget session that should start in July.
Meanwhile, PM Nepal met with deputy parliamentary party leader of the Maoist Narayan Kaji Shrestha to discuss a way out of the current stalemate. PM Nepal has termed the meeting positive, although no concrete agreement was reached.
In a separate function held Tuesday, PM Nepal has reiterated his call to the Maoists to join the government. The Maoists would be given more importance as it is the largest party in the CA if they join the government, Nepal said. nepalnews.com Jun 30 09
