Nepali Congress (NC), the main constituent of the ruling coalition led by CPN-UML, has intensified parleys to form a new government under its leadership.

Some senior NC leaders met Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal Sunday morning and discussed possibilities for a NC-led government.

During the meeting that took place at PM Nepal's official residence in Baluwatar, PM Nepal was said to be positive about an NC-led government having already made up his mind to tender his resignation soon.

Apart from the issue of prime minister's resignation, there was also discussion on finding a possible way out to the current political deadlock including the government policy and programmes and the budget for the next fiscal year that will surely be affected if PM Nepal is to step down at this moment.

NC Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel told journalists after attending the meeting that there was talk about resuming the meeting between the three major parties (NC, UML and Maoists) in order to bail the country out from the deepening political crisis.

Meanwhile, the Central Committee meeting of NC is taking place in a short while today to discuss the feasibility of a new government led by the party.

Although the NC is said to be willing to take the government leadership, there is a major dispute among the top NC leaders as to who from the party will lead it.

Senior NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, NC PP leader Ram Chandra Poudel and party general secretary Kul Bahadur Gurung each have claimed the post of prime minister for themselves.

A Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the party held at party headquarters Sanepa Saturday had given the responsibility of choosing a candidate after discussion with other parties to acting president Sushil Koirala, parliamentary party leader and vice-chairman Ram Chandra Poudel, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and general secretary Kul Bahadur Gurung. nepalnews.com
