Shakar D. Bairagi, Nepal's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, addressed the 9th session of the Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), on behalf of the LDC Group,  Monday.

In his address, Baigagi appreciated the role of the WIPO in helping the least developed countries towards promoting the development of intellectual property environment and infrastructure through the adoption of the WIPO deliverables. He also lauded WIPO's decision to mainstream the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for the LDCs in its work programme and expressed the view that the WIPO can significantly contribute to the realization of a number of IPOA goals, including in the areas of science, technology and innovation.

Ambassador Bairagi said the works of the WIPO remain crucial both in building productive capacity across a broad range of areas and sectors such as agriculture, food security and rural development, human and social development, trade, technology, and in addressing persistent and emerging challenges in the LDCs.

He underlined the need to harness LDCs’ development potential through promotion of knowledge, innovation and development of adequate technological foundation through, among others, transfer of technology.
