Tourism associations announce joint protest against NTB

Joint Tourism Coordination Committee (JTCC) has announced a week-long protest programmes demanding probe into the financial embezzlement at Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).

Organising a press conference in the capital on Tuesday, JTCC – a forum of travel trade organisations – said that they will organise gatherings in different places, rallies and a sit-in at NTB gate.

The JTCC also decided to urge the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Yuvraj Khatiwada to block the bank accounts of the board.

“We are forced to announce the protests in order to end the financial irregularities at NTB.” said JTCC coordinator Ramesh Dhamala. He also warned of strong protest if their demand were not fulfilled.

Similarly, the committee is also set to shut sales counter of Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card at NTB.

The committee has also announced to organise protests outside valley including in Pokhara, Chitwan, Far-West and Eastern Region.

JTCC has demanded the government to appoint private sector representatives to the board of NTB at the recommendations of tourism-related associations, to restructure the national tourism organisation in line with the taskforce reports.

JTCC has also asked the government to form a taskforce with private sector representatives and auditing experts in order to probe into the programmes and expenditures made over the past five years.

Regarding the lingering of the process of selecting a CEO for NTB, JTCC demands government to immediately remove the Acting CEO, who is one of the candidates for the post, until the selection process is finalised.
