Casinos to resume soon: Fin Min Mahat

Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat has said that the closed casinos would resume soon. With the closure of the casinos, over 10,000 workers have become jobless across the country.

Inaugurating the 4th convention of the UNI in Kathmandu on Saturday, the Finance Minister said that the casinos would be resumed soon after holding discussions with workers and concerned bodies.  

The UNI is the largest organization of workers in the world. As many as 900 trade unions of 150 countries are associated in the organizations.

Though the government had closed the casinos citing they failed to pay taxes to the government, they would be resumed soon, as thousands of workers are involving in it.

However, the casino operators have urged the government to decrease the tax rates.     

Speaking on a different note, Minister Mahat urged the workers to develop their skills to achieve success in their respective fields.  

The people elected government cannot neglect the social security though the drafting of the Social Security Act has been delayed due to political instability, Mahat added.  

The Communication International (CI), The International Graphics Federation (GIF) and Media and Entertainment (ME) had jointly formed the UNI on January 1, 2002. The head office of the organization is in Neon of Switzerland.   

The UNI has been contributing in the fields of industrial peace and social dialogues in Nepal. As many as 17 different trade unions are associated in the UNI since December 17, 2002. Over 100,000 workers in Nepal are associated in different 17 trade unions, it is learnt.    

Meanwhile, the special guest of the convention Christopher Ing, secretary at the UNI Asia Pacific Region, said that the sustainable development is possible thorough workers solidarity.

Similarly, chairman of the UNI Nepal chapter Lekha Prasad Burlakoti, secretary general Shankar Lamichhane, among others,  national and international guests have pointed out the need of security for workers in employment and access of women to employment.   

Issues related to lessening effect of environmental impact, inter-regional cooperation, provident fund, production, retirement funds for workers and investment in social service sectors are scheduled to be discussed in the convention.
