Maha Nawami, the ninth day of the Bada Dashain festival was observed all over the country today.
The festival is considered to be of special importance because it marks the day goddess Chamunda had slain the demon Raktabij.
Temples were crowded since early morning today. Maha Nawami is celebrated by offering animal sacrifices in the Dashain ghar and temples. Devotees headed to Dakshinkali, Guheshwari, Maitidevi, Kalikasthan, Naxal Bhagawati, Bhadrakali, Shobha Bhagawati, Bijyeshwori, Indrayani, Naradevi, Bajrabarahi, Raktakali, Bajrayogini and Sankata and to offer prayers and sacrifices.
Vehicles, machinery and arms were also cleaned and offered sacrifices. Chicken, ducks, goats, sheep and buffaloes are sacrificed in this festival. However, over the years animal sacrifices have decreased and have been replaced by coconuts, eggs and fruits.
Today is also the only day in the year when the doors of Taleju Bhawani in Hanuman Dhoka are opened. Devotees lined up from early morning to pay respects in the temple.
Dashain concludes on the tenth and the most important day, Bijaya Dashami, when tika is offered.
