UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Onsari Gharti Magar has been elected the Constituent Assembly vice-chairperson and Deputy Speaker on Wednesday from the Legislature-Parliament.
Magar received 484 votes supporting her candidacy, securing a clear majority out of the 489 votes cast. She only had five votes against her.
“Respected member Onsari Gharti Magar has been elected with majority votes,” said Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang. “I wish her best for her role as the CA vice-chairperson.”
Her win became apparent after she secured support of the three largest party in the CA. Her candidacy was proposed by UCPN (M) leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara and supported by Nepali Congress lawmaker Ananda Dhungana on Tuesday. CPN-UML had also announced its support for the Maoist candidate, stating that all political parties had supported UML to elect Nembang as CA Chairman and that the election to the CA Vice-Chairperson would be held on the same spirit.
Magar’s only contender was Anuradha Thapa from Nepal Workers and Peasants Party.
The CA Vice-Chairman was be elected on the basis of majority votes as per the Article 71 (1) of the interim constitution.
