CPN-UML has demanded with the government to declare a date for the elections of the local bodies (DDCs, VDCs, municipalities) at the earliest.
Making the decisions of the party’s central committee public on Thursday, UML Chairperson Jhalanath Khanal stressed that announcing the elections date is crucial.
“We are even ready to postpone our general convention, if the elections are held coinciding with the convention,” Khanal said.
Khanal’s statement has come at a time when Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Local Development, Prakash Man Singh has expressed his intention to hold the local elections soon.
Singh has not declared the elections date so far, despite his commitment to conduct the elections within the next six months.
The election process also requires discussions among political parties present inside and outside the Constituent Assembly in order to make the process more effective.
Nepal last held the local elections in 1997. Civil servants have been running the local bodies currently in absence of the elected representatives of the people.
