Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President of CPN-UML, Bamdev Gautam, has said that his party’s upcoming general convention will elect UML’s Parliamentary Party leader, KP Oli, as the new party’s president.
Addressing a meeting of UML cadres and leaders organized by Lumbini Zone Coordination Committee in Butwal on Monday, DPM Gautam said it is the right time for Oli to become the party president.
“Current president Jhalanath Khanal has expressed unwillingness to contest for the same post again. Senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, too, has run the party for 16 years. Therefore, it comes naturally for KP Oli to lead the party now,” Gautam said.
Gautam, at the same time, made it clear that he would not compete for the party’s top post and instead, would support the candidacy of Oli.
He added that the forthcoming general convention will be an assembly of party unity, as it would provide motivation to move ahead collectively.
The CPN-UML, which is the second largest party after Nepali Congress and an equal coalition partner in the government, is conducting its 9th general convention beginning June 7 in Kathmandu, to elect a new leadership.
Oli, a kidney transplant patient, is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in New Delhi. Of late, DPM Gautam followed by MK Nepal flew to the Indian capital separately to inquire about the health condition of Oli.
According to Oli's doctors, he has no problem with the new kidneys, but is suffering from swelling in his hands as a side effect.
