The death toll in Taplejung pick-up van accident has reached eight, while 10 are critically injured, according to news reports from the eastern mountain district on Monday.
According to DSP Govinda Prasad Acharya, the accident took place, as the van skidded off the Mechi Highway in Dokhu VDC-6, Taplejung and plunged 500 metres below in a sloppy area.
The van plated Me 1 Ja 1437 was heading from Phidim of Panchthar to Taplejung when the accident occurred.
The injured were rushed to the nearby hospital in the district headquarters. Most of them are in serious condition. The rescue operation was carried out by police and the locals. Identities of many passengers are yet to be confirmed, while the vehicle owner has been identified as Khagendra Shrestha.
