CIAA arrests Dept of Foreign Employment Director; eight more detained

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has arrested nine staff of the Department of Foreign Employment including its Director, Chiranjibi Adhikari, on charge of irregularities while issuing labour permits to Nepali workers going abroad for foreign employment.

Along with Adhikari, the CIAA on Wednesday arrested section officers Kumar Prasad Pokharel, Ghambhir Singh Bista, Lawa Raj Joshi and Babu Lal Regmi. Likewise, senior clerks (nayab subba) Bhim Bahadur Basnet and Laxmi Prasad Dhungana along with computer operators Sanjib Nepal and Sushil Shakya were also detained.

All nine have been charged of issuing labour permits to 172 Nepali workers on the basis of fake documents. Of them 109 had left for foreign employment in Qatar on January 12 and 63 to Dubai on January 17 earlier this year, according to CIAA spokesperson Sreedhar Sapkota.

The accused have been taken into custody and necessary investigation is underway, Sapkota added.
