A three-member probe committee has been formed under SP Sushil Kumar Bhandari of the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office to investigate into the mysterious death of taxi driver Ravi Maharjan in police custody.

After the formation of the probe panel, the locals including Maharjan’s relatives and taxi drivers have stopped obstructing traffic movement and road at several places on the way to Chapagaun from Satdobato.

Lalitpur area had remained tense on Thursday after the locals started protesting against what they say police atrocities which took the life of Maharajan, 23, in police custody. His relatives and taxi drivers staged demonstration outside police station in Chapagaun claiming that Maharajan died due to police torture in custody.

They had staged demonstration in various places along the Chapagaun and Satdobato route demanding investigation into the death of Maharjan in police custody and severe action against those responsible for his death.

Police say that Maharjan, who was arrested two weeks ago on the charge of possessing marijuana, had fallen sick while in police custody and died while being rushed to Patan Hospital for treatment.
