CIAA raids driving license office; puts 12 behind bar

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has raided the Transport Management Office at Ekanta Kuna, Lalitpur, arresting 12 for their involvement in driving license distribution irregularities.  

According to a statement released by the national anti-corruption body on Sunday, the raid followed a huge number of complaints related to corruption and frauds in issuing and renewing driving licenses and providing route permits, etc.

The 12 have been taken into custody so as to further investigate the matter, said the statement. Among the arrested, four are staff of the Transport Office, while eight are agents working in the guise of facilitators.

The four arrested staff include: Ram Dutta Bhatta (acting office chief), section officers of renewal section Rameshwor Aryal and Bal Kumar Khatiwada and accounts officer Tirtha Raj Gautam.

Similarly, the eight individuals arrested for their involvement in the alleged corruption include: photocopy centre operators Tek B Maharjan, Bishnu B Thapa and Anil K Pandey, documentation facilitators Bikram BC, Bishnu B Thing and Debraj Lamichhane and document collectors Sanukaji Desar and Bishnu Basnet, added the CIAA statement.
