Fire engulfs Birgunj Customs Warehouse

A massive fire that set off from electricity short circuit engulfed the warehouse of Birgunj Customs Office, on Wednesday morning.

The fire that started at around 3.00 am was taken under control at 7.00 this morning with the help of security forces along with four fire engines brought from Birgunj sub-metropolis, Makawanpur, Pathalaiya and Kalaiya.

It is speculated that the fire spread out to oil and gas cylinders stored in the warehouse, said Officiating Chief District Officer of Parsa Yograj Pandey.

The customs source said merchandises and goods imported from India and other countries worth over Rs 1 billion were stored in the warehouse stretching over 100 metres length and 15 metres breadth.

Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, Divesh Lohani said security forces were working to retrieve the stored goods with the help of two dozers.

The loss is yet to be fully ascertained, he added. RSS
