5 soldiers, 77 militants killed in Afghan military operation

Five Afghan army soldiers and 77 Taliban militants have been killed during a military operation in the country's southern province of Uruzgan, sources said on Wednesday.

"Five Afghan National Army soldiers martyred and 77 terrorists had been killed during an operation in Uruzgan," Major General Zahir Azimi spokesman of Defense Ministry said in his twitter account.He said the operation was conducted on early Monday in the province, with Tirin Kot as its capital 370 km south of Afghan capital Kabul.The security forces press on to clear the militants across Afghanistan as the country is preparing for a presidential runoff election slated for June 14.

The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, has yet to make comments.
