Unified CPN (Maoist) has given November 20 ultimatum to the government for reaching consensus. Nepalnews asked some members of the general public how they viewed the Maoist ultimatum:

Parties must arrive at a consensus because there is no alternative to it. Maoists should agree for dialogue rather than engaging in protests.

The Maoists should be flexible for a compromise. Political compromise is what the people want in the present context. Parties should try to find out a solution before November 20. They should not give up efforts even after that. Agitations will not solve the problem.

Solution is hard to come by November 20. Political consensus has become so elusive since the Constituent Assembly members whose primary job is to write the constitution started engaging in power politics.

Maoists have made big demands, which cannot be met. Their demands cannot be met just because they have given the ultimatum.

Political leaders have shown no interest in drafting the new constitution. And, I don't see the possibility of immediate solution. They should know that the country will slide into chaos if the constitution is not issued within the stipulated time.

Failing to reach consensus is to go against the people's will. Maoist agitations will not solve the problem.

Well, I hope the maos realise that they are beginning to lose the pulse of the
people. Their honeymoon (a veru long one) is officially over. Now they have to
stop the rhetoric and impossible, unrealistic agendas which is infact dividing
the nation especially with their ethnic based politics for power, and begin a
democratisartion of theit militant cadres. Nepal cannot afford any further
mishaps. We need to get together and build her up in a democratic insutional
manner. Enough of ideological clap trap im ported from foreign nations.
Insutional democracy is natural for us a freedom loving independent nation.
Insute the best of all democratic principles and discard the dogmatic nonsense.
Rememeber even Marx had some good ideas. But there is no rule that says we need
all of Marx. Infact we know most of Marx is defunct in this day and age.

I personally don't think the ultimatum shall work. The only solution is to find
the midway in between and create an environment to bust up the country by
allowing good environment to work rather than creating chaos.

Tashi Tamang  - Interest of country and people first!   |99.233.20.xxx |2009-11-16 16:17:51
People should understand that the concept of political power through the barrel
of gun is completely out dated and nonsense. Nepalese should understand that
violent agitation and threat of any kind by Maoist will bring nothing more than
the suffering to the innocent poor people.

Interest of the Nepal and Nepalese
should be the first priority rather than the interest of any party in Nepal. The
fact here is that, after the fall Panchyat system, multiparty established, which
also failed and than came the Maoist in the government, which turned the country
into worst situation, due to it's violent acts of extortion and corruption.

The ultimatum should be given to draft the new consution in Nepal ASAP, not to
the ultimatum for power struggle. Without a government of established consution
in order, Nepal will reach no where rather than becoming a failed state with
unending suffering!
