People living in the remote parts of districts including Bajura, Humla, Mugu, Jajarkot, Rukum and Dailekh are facing an acute food shortage this season.
Although, these districts have been facing food shortages since many years, the problem has been aggravated this year due to a reduced production because of a long drought.
Moreover, the supply has not been smooth as many flights were disrupted due to unsuitable weather conditions. Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) and United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP) have been providing food materials in these districts.
However, as the food supplied is mostly distributed in and around the district headquarters, people living in the remote villages are facing shortage of food materials.
After conducting a survey in six VDCs of the north-west part of Bajura, District Food Security Network in the district concluded, none of the households had food stock more than a month.
The network has mentioned in a report it launched Saturday, the locals of Bichchhya, Rugin, Sappata, Jagannath, Wai and Bandhu VDCs will go hungry if additional food does not reach the area within two weeks.
At least 3,000 of the 22,000 people living in those VDCs will be badly hit by the food shortage, the report says.
NFC supplies food in these districts from Nepalgunj and Surkhet. However, the supply does not meet the demand.
Although we have been increasing the quota of the food supplied, it is not proportionate to the increase in population, said Harihar Shrestha of NFC Nepalgunj. The demand for food has further increased for Dashian, but we have not been able to supply as per the demand, he added.
According to Shrestha, 1,228 quintals of rice has been sent to Humla, 1,054 quintals to Mugu, 1,000 quintals to Dolpa, 1,766 quintals to Bajura, 1,092 quintals to Dailekh, 600 quintals to Jajarkot and 200 quintals of rice has been sent to Rolpa, so far, this year. nepalnews.com
