Nepal Sambat (NS) 1130 has begun, Monday. Nepalis, particularly of the Newar community, are observing the beginning of the new year with various programmes.

A rally was organised from Basantapur at 7 am, this morning to mark the coming of the new year. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal will address the the gathering to be organised after the rally.

The participants of the rally also demanded NS be used for the national calendar. Last year, the erstwhile UCPN (Maoist) -led government had pledged it would announce the use of NS officially for national calendar.

However, no decision has been taken to this effect till date.

President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala, Rastriya Janashakti Party chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa and other leaders have issued New Year messages wishing all Nepalis a happy and prosperous year ahead.

NS was started by Shankhadhar Shakhwa 1130 years ago by freeing the poor peasants of Thimi from the credit they owed to landlords.

It was used for national calendar till NS 888 until the erstwhile government decided to use the Bikram era in 1960 BS.

People of Newar community worship their bodies on the first day of the new year, a rite known as 'Mha Puja.' nepalnews.com

Dhanya unhaharoo ko bharaat moha. maharjandr  - some information about nepal sambhat   |220.166.97.xxx |2009-10-20 04:56:24 Nepal sambhat was born in nepal itself 1130 year ago .And used in mallas,shah dynasty but it was banned due to some reason during the time of rana sasan. it's the newar community who are preserving this year after being banned also.kathmandu being capital and newar being its native people so they are familiar with this year from the begining.And it become custom of newar community to celebrate every year. so i want to clear here that nepal sambhat is not only the newari new year its the year origin itself with in nepal and we should be proud that alleast we have our own year. that why,newari community people are trying to make it national calender year. And i think for new nepal is a good thing to have something new than that of changing flag of nepal.... i think this will help some people to understand more about this year... I could not understand the mathematics here. It is stated that NS 888 govt banned NS and started BS 1960. so Bikram sambat is not in use in govt level for (1130 - 888 =) 242 years. On the other hand if I calculate date date is Bikram sambat it confule me too, if you calculate the date you will get (2065 - 1960= ) 105. So what is the real date ??? I am SLC p but could not understand this mathematics. I really need help. The past rulers adopted the bikram sambat because of the significance the newars swayed in the past and for the fear of their uprising. Today Nepal Sambat holds significant for all Nepalese and not just Newars..its a different thing that the newars realise the significance of this indigenous calender that has been adopted for centuries !!
