UML leader Oli, a vocal critic of the Maoists and their activities, had invited top leaders of the three parties including Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Unified CPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, vice-chairmen Mohan Baidhya, Babu Ram Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Nepali Congress vice president Ram Chandra Poudel, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, deputy general secretary Ram Sharan Mahat and UML leader Ishwar Pokhrel for the dinner.
Although, the leaders said they found each other flexible and committed to end the deadlock after the dinner, they failed to come to a concrete agreement on ending the political deadlock. The leaders said, they had agreed in principle to find a solution to end the current deadlock and continue negotiations, but did not mention what could be the solution.
Oli told reporters after the dinner that wrapped up at about 10 pm that he had called the meeting to discuss current problem and its solution from its roots.
There are only seven months to write the constitution, we need a two-thirds majority for it. So, there is no option to consensus, said Oli. We have begun the discussion, it was very positive and we will find a solution soon, he added.
Oli further said, he initiated the dialogues as we need to prove to the international community that we Nepalis can solve our crisis ourselves.
Leaders of all three parties said, the meeting was a good beginning and they were hopeful for a breakthrough soon. Prime Minister Nepal said the discussions were very positive. Maoist chairman Dahal said there had been an agreement to work seriously for a consensus.
NC leader Ram Chandra Poudel said, the meeting helped erase misunderstandings among the parties.
We were suspecting the Maoists had the same intention as before (i.e. to capture the state), and they (Maoists) were scared they were being singled out by other parties, Poudel said adding, this meeting has cleared the misunderstandings.
However, none of the leaders said when and how the current political crisis could be resolved. Maoist leaders reiterated their agitation would continue until their demands were addressed.
The leaders have agreed to initiate separate discussions to open the House if a consensus in other issues is not reached soon. During the dinner, NC and UML leaders requested the Maoists to let the proceedings of the legislature parliament to pass the budget.
They requested us to open the House, but did not talk about the President's move, Maoist vice chairman Shrestha said.
The dinner was hosted the same day UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal left for New Delhi. Oli, who was defeated by Khanal in election for party chairman last year, has big rivalry with Khanal. nepalnews.com
