Fresh from a deadly diarrhea outbreak which killed dozens of people, a number of villages in mid-western Rukum district are facing serious shortage of food ahead of major festivals, Dashain and Tihar.
Reports say at least a dozen VDCs including Taksera, Gotangkot, Jang and Sisnera in eastern Rukum are facing food shortage with the stock in Nepal Food Corporation's depots running out completely.
These villages face food shortage around this time every year, but this year the problem is more serious because of low yield of crops caused by prolonged draught.
NFC had distributed food in these areas a month earlier, but the supply did not last more than a month, leaving thousands of people hungry.
Diarrhea epidemic in Rukum and Jajarkot districts killed nearly 200 people in the past couple of months. A report prepared by INSEC, a human rights group, stated that decayed rice supplied by the World Food Programme (WFP) was the main cause behind the diarrhea outbreak. nepalnews.com
