A 16-day campaign on violence against women, also known as the White Ribbon Campaign, has started in various countries of the world from Wednesday.
The campaign that started in 1991 is being observed every year with various awareness raising programmes on violence against women from November 25 to December 10. Today, November 25, is also the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
On the occasion, the Office of the Prime Minister and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR) have jointly launched a one minute television clip highlighting the violence against women who are alleged to be practicing witchcraft.
A one-minute clip will be broadcast from the state-controlled Nepal Television just before the prime news at 8pm every day for the next one month.
OHCHR and the PM’s office decided to air such video as a large number of women alleged to be practicing witchcraft mostly in the rural Terai have been ill-treated, tortured, brutally beaten up, and forced to eat human excreta.
This tradition is deeply-rooted in superstition and entrenched discriminatory practices especially against widows, the violence against women allegedly involved in the practice of witchcraft is a gross human rights violation and a crime punishable under national and international human rights laws.
The government has also announced to observe the year 2010 as the year of violence against women. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal announced various programmes to be carried out next year in order to observe the year of violence against women amid a function in Kathmandu Wednesday. nepalnews.com
