Tribhuvan University (TU), under pressure from student unions, has halved the tuition and other fees from the amounts it had stipulated a month ago.
TU Academic Council met on Friday and decided to reduce the hiked fees on all heads by 50 percent.
Varsity officials, who were earlier reluctant to reduce the hiked fees backtracked on their decision after agitating students detained top TU officials including Vice Chancellor Madhav Raj Sharma for almost 12 hours on Thursday.
Students had detained the TU officials from 2 pm Thursday to 2 am, Friday. Student leaders say, they had let them go only after they agreed to revoke the decision.
According to the revised fee-structure, the monthly tuition fees for Masters and Bachelors level is stipulated at Rs 350 and Rs 250 respectively. The earlier decision had stipulated these fees at Rs 700 and Rs 500 respectively. It was increased from Rs 61 and 50 respectively.
Likewise, the library fees for Bachelors and Masters level is reduced to Rs 75 and Rs 150 per annum and the admission fee has been reduced to Rs 250 payable once every level.
However, the varsity’s decision to half the hiked fees has failed to pacify the student leaders. They have accused TU officials of taking the decision without their consent.
There had been an agreement to revoke the decision altogether, but they decieved us, said Lekhnath Nyaupane, chairman of Maoist student wing All Nepal Independent Students Union – Revolutionary.
The student leaders are meeting later on Saturday to decide on future course of action. nepalnews.com
