Huge piles of uncollected garbage can be seen at the major thoroughfares in Kathmandu and Lalitpur, the two major cities in the valley.
Pedestrians have a hard time even walking in the pavements as the stinking garbage cover the entire walking area and sometime even flow into the middle of the road to cause serious traffic snarls.
More and more people are wearing masks not only to save themselves from the dust and smog, but also to spare themselves the foul smell emanating from the garbage.
The valley's perennial garbage problem refuses to die down as trends since the last two years has shown that it recurs in every 4 or 5 months.
This time a previously unheard Sisdole Waste Management Concern Committee has barred garbage trucks of Kathmandu Metropolitcan Corporation (KMC) and Lalitpur Sub-metropolitan City from transporting the thousands of tons of wastage the valleys produces to the only landfill site in Sisdole for more than a week now.
The Committee, which is formed by locals of Sisdole, is again holding talks with KMC officials Thursday for the implementation of past agreements which includes construction of better roads, schools and hospitals in the areas surrounding the landfill site.
They say that they would not back down this time until they are sure that all their demands will be fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the government is planning to transport the city's waste to Sisdole landfill site by mobilising the police force. nepalnews.com
