The government has lifted the ban on Nepali migrant workers in Iraq, Wednesday.
Spokesperson at the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management Purna Chandra Bhattarai organised a press meet at the ministry Wednesday afternoon and informed journalists about the government decision to lift the ban on Nepali migrant workers in Iraq.
The government had banned Nepali citizens from migrating to Iraq for work after 12 Nepalis were brutally murdered by an Islamic radical group in August, 2004.
Minister for Labour and Transport Management Mohamad Aftab Alam, who is in his hometown Rautahat at present, approved the decision to lift the ban from his hometown Wednesday.
Speaking at the press conference Bhattarai said, the government lifted the ban as the security situation in Iraq had improved over the years and there is no threat to Nepali citizens at present.
Although, Nepal had banned its citizens from going to Iraq for work, more than 30,000 Nepalis are still working in Nepal.
Nepal took the decision to lift the ban after the Nepalis working in Iraq faced a threat of repatriation following stringent orders from the US Central Command in Iraq to the companies employing foreign workers to employ workers in compliance with the local, international and US laws and the laws of the home country of the migrant workers.
The ministry has decided to forward its decision to the US government and the Iraq government for necessary action. A letter about the same has already been sent to the US embassy in Kathmandu via the foreign ministry.
High level government officials including Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, chief secretary Madhav Ghimire, foreign ministry secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai and labour ministry secretary Dinesh Adhikary held several rounds of discussion before taking the decision.
Although, the ministry has decided to lift the ban, it has decided not to send new workers to Iraq before further assessing the situation of Nepalis in Iraq.
The labour ministry has also requested the foreign ministry to invalidate the notice ‘not valid for Iraq’ marked in the passports issued after 2004. nepalnews.com
