society through a new constitution while pledging commitment to achieve the millennium development goals chief among which is ending poverty.

"We are committed to build a just society through a new constitution. Let's all commit to achieve the millennium development goals not only for today but for every day," Dr Yadav said addressing a gathering of more than four hundred people including ministers, Constituent Assembly members, the diplomatic corps, UN Agency heads, media and civil society at Shital Niwas, the President's office.

Those gathered at Shital Niwas were asked to stand up while the President read the pledge against poverty, "We are standing up today to express solidarity with people all over the world to fight against poverty and inequality. We want an end to poverty and inequality."

He further said, "We want to create a society where mothers don't die while giving birth. Children will have the right to quality education. No one will die due to diseases. Overall environment justice and sustainable development will be ensured by conservation and proper use of natural resources. The decisions made by the policy makers will not be for their personal gain but for the benefit of the poor and marginalized people as well."

Speaking on behalf of the government of Nepal, Dr. Yubaraj Khatiwada, vice-chairperson of the National Planning Commission reiterated the government's commitment to end poverty in the country.

He said that the government has taken efforts to streamline poverty alleviation in the national development planning process to meet the Millennium Development Goals.

On the same occasion, the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator of the UN System in Nepal, Robert Piper, addressed the gathering and highlighted the conscientious efforts of the UN system in adding value to Nepalis government's efforts in meeting the MDGs.

"The UN Country Team from its side is working across all of the millennium development goals. This includes activities that vary from food assistance, to support for the education sector, programs to support the elimination of gender based violence, the training of birth attendants, employment and income generating projects, the distribution of anti-viral drugs, as well as support for the upgrading of small towns and slums, " he said.

In another event in Tundikhel-the open theatre, the eight Constituent Assembly members representing all parties, read the Stand Up pledge and proved that some issues are beyond and above politics. Around 5000 people enjoyed a musical program while urging their leaders to keep up to the promise of achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

This is the fourth year that "Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!" mobilization is taking place from October 16th to 18th.

On this day, millions of people across the globe called on world leaders to eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). nepalnews.com

Mr. Anonymous,
At this moment of time we Nepalis should not be concerned who Dr.
Yadav was and what he did before. Whether he collected "Hafta" or is it
just a rumour being spread to malign him by his detractors. I know that many of
us grudge the fact that a person of Madhesi origin became our first President
rather than a Bahun or a Chettri or someone of Pahadi origin. This is our
narrow-mindedness because of which the country stands at the threshold of
disintegration. I, as a common Nepali am only concerned with the fact that it
was Dr. Yadav as President who stopped authoritarian power from falling into the
hands of the Maoists. We all know what Prachanda's true intentions were as
described by him in graphic detail by the Shaktikhor video expose. Need I say
more? We should forget the past and look to the future!

This is the face of the nepal politician. Everyone should read. I know this guy
very well. This is the person while he was health minister of
Nepal, pressured
to DHOs' to provide certificates of complition of work which
were not completed,
under the supervission of his son. He used to collect huptta
from RHD's and
chief of zonal hospitals. This is just a hunaman on of Giraja.
Whatever he is
speaking is like tears of coecodiles. he is the worst health
professional I ever
learnt in such a leadership position.

Dear Mr. President,
Many thanks for your inspiring speech. While some of my
countrymen may not agree, but we should all remain grateful to you for saving
our country from falling into wrong hands. The step you then took required
courage and conviction of the highest order. For that step, even though many
would readily condemn you, but I am sure given the time, history will judge you
correctly and give due recognition to your wisdom and far-sightedness. I am
further convinced that we Nepalis will ultimately be successful in establishing
a just and poverty-free society. And a society that is free from Fear and
Violence!
