Energy Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) leader Prakash Sharan Mahat said on Wednesday that his party will under no circumstances agree to call the President's move on the Army chief row "unconstitutional", like the UCPN (Maoist) are demanding all parties to do, and that it will not show its approval to a resolution motion prepared by any party that will even remotely hint so.

Speaking at a press meet organized by Parsa chapter of Press Union in southern industrial town of Birgunj, Minister Mahat claimed that the government is engaged in efforts to "establish democracy, rule of law and sustainable peace".

He also claimed that the crippling power-cuts Nepalis are forced to bear for long hours every year will be over in three years time, as the government is trying to acquire more electricity from India and looking for other alternative energy sources.

The energy minister's remarks come at a time when Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the state's electricity monopoly, is planning to raise the "load-shedding" hours further and has already initiated process to do so in eastern Nepal districts Sunsari and Morang citing "increasing demand".

Currently, the people of the country are forced to bear 2-3 hours of power-cuts everyday, which however is an improvement from the paralyzing 18 hours of no electricity supply during the fag end of the last year and first few months of this year.

The energy minister also assured that he will personally appeal for less load-shedding in Birgunj-Pathlaiya industrial zone where a number of industries are located. Nepalnews.com

nepalese peple need to learn how to become a general public rather than
a member of a party only to be taken for granted during elections or a
"Chakkajam" or Protest Ralley for that matter. They need to choose their
ruler based on their historical performance and expected capacity to deliver
results in the future. This makes me laugh - I am sure Sujata is enjoying her
deputy priministerial role but what has she done for the country? what do people
believe she will do? There was not much people could do regarding her recent
promotion (not even gutless leaders within congress could do anything) but they
could have done something when GP Koirala dissolved elected Parliament in the
90's (he won't probably see an elected parliament again in his life time).
That's when the country's bad fortunes started and no one knows when it is going
to end. However, you could start with scrapping your membership for any

PS Mahat's comments on politics rather than addressing the root cause issues in
his own portfolio are not surprising. He is not any different to any other
nepalese politician. Nepalese politicians are taking the poeple for a ride -
they have been for a long time and will probably do for a long time to come
unless Nepalese people start making them accountable. Whichever way you look at
it, every politician's motivation is power to rule. If you get the power to rule
without serving the country, you might as well garb it with both hands. That is
the approach current politicians are taking - in every side of politics for that
matter. The whole "Milijuli" approach is wrong. All it has done is given
green light for the country to be run through negotiation among a bunch of
immoral characters. Solution should start with everyone who is not actively
engaged in politics scrapping their political membership. Nepalese people need

This guy claims that the power cuts will be over in 3 years time....3 years,
yeah right?

I wonder if he's done some work towards solving this issue or is
he just saying things the way every politician says.

...feel pity for my
country...these political bastards will never let the country prosper...seen
everybody in all these years- the kings, the congress, communist, moaists and
each and every single corrupt polotical mind...they should all be lined up and
shot.

I am not sure how good the infrastructures to import electricity from China are.
This can be credible short term source especially in current world wide economic
down turn. Chinese are shutting down power stations as business activities
slowed down. The government should be able to negotiate with Chinese for the
import of spare capacity. It would be nice have the compeion between our two
giant neighbours to serve our need.
