CoAS Chief Chhatra Man Singh Gurung (File photo)
Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Chhatra Man Singh Gurung met Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at the PMO in Singh Durbar Thursday and informed him about his upcoming visit to the U.S.

CoAS Gurung is leaving for the U.S. on a week-long visit on Saturday to attend the 12th annual conference of Chief of Defense to be held in Honolulu next week. This is his first foreign visit after assuming the post of CoAS.

During the meeting with the prime minister, Gurung discussed handing over the responsibility of officiating Army chief to Major Gen. Toran Jung Bahadur Singh, the second most senior General in the army's chain-of-command, during his absence.

However, the government has held up the promotion of Major Gen. Singh to the army's second-in-command due to charges against him of serious human rights violations during his command of the Bhairav Nath battalion.

But reports say the government is preparing to give the responsibility of officiating Army chief to Major Gen. Singh during Gurung's absence anyway. Nepalnews.com

prashant Jha  - Chief Minister makune   |113.199.129.xxx |2009-10-23 12:31:54
It is so unfortunate for Nepal that the Chief Minister is Makune who lost
elections and who was an unsuccessful banker. How can he lead the State.
He is
Chief Minister due to the blessings of our Prime Minister man Mohan Singh.
gehendra  - do not publish in provoking way   |113.199.162.xxx |2009-10-23 11:28:37
I would request the Medias not to add and publish provoking and unnecessary news
before the people. This visit of COAS to US is not a new thing because it has
been practiced many times in the years past. Mainly, my concern is with the
additional news regarding the acting chief.
The news about the acting chief
during the absence of COAS, in fact, sounds irritating because of the addition
of the name of Bhairavnath Gan again. Such an unnecessary publicity in sensitive
and transitional period only creates new topic for gossips even in the high
level bureaucrats and politicians as well as in between the tea stall’s
regular visitors. Since it is universal and common practice that the second one
in the chain of command has right to be an acting authority so Mr. Singh is
authorized in this case.

Bmali  - Why Party Consent...?   |202.79.55.xxx |2009-10-23 04:13:44
Its' surprising...Why Coz needs all party's consent for an official tour abroad
to attend Seminar. Representatives from all the parts of the country do attend
such Seminar or meetings. There is Govt in the country to look after such things
& the Coz is responsible to the Govt not to the Party Men.Why some people make
hue & cry for such a routinal things. They feel that they are supreme on all. Of
course, in democracy the people are supreme. But people's representatives are
also the supreme body in their field. The should not be undermioned. In the
national crisis or emergency time the concerned representatives like Coz take
care of the nation. They come in front line in action. All people can not go
except in exceptional case

don't move around...stay in nepal and develop nepal
Anonymous   |117.193.5.xxx |2009-10-22 14:56:26
he cannot do so without all parties approval..he is not a politician..he duty is
just to protect nepal and be away from politics.

he cannot move around..that
too to america which is against a party(maoist) during this time wen there is
extreme instability...the major reason to instability is the above news like
things happening without proper disscussion and approval of all parties.if US
calls he can't go..he is to serve nepal not USA interests.

if not then there
are many kings 2day like army and girija and PM and president with different
power centers..this is very bad..there should be only one power center in a
country to be stable

RDorje  - welcome to US   |24.17.78.xxx |2009-10-22 14:51:59
Though I am US citizen, I was born in Shabru northern Nepal. Its refreshing to
learn that Chief Of Army Mr. Gurug is coming to US. I always hear Nepal's ties
with commnist China as if Nepal being a lapdog of communist state. I hope and
wish to see Nepal being a balanced fair foreign polocy making, not to be living
under foreign duress.
Remember, America is the world's most powerful nation!

HI thule panta, i don't understand what you mean?
Thule Panta  - This is not an ISSUE   |113.199.130.xxx |2009-10-22 11:49:19
Each and every time his name comes in the news, the issue of Bharav Nath
Battalian is brought about. he did not do everything by his own will. If Badal
and Prachanda and others who did similar thing in the past can become minister
and roam about as innocent citizen why cannot he? Is this because he is an Army
Officer? I want answer from the news correspondents.
