| Defense Minister Bidhya Devi Bhandari |
“The peace agreement was done in a different political situation than now and that too for 6 months only,” Minister Bhandari told Kantipur Daily on Thursday, “it has now become three years old and that is why it is necessary to review it.”
She repeated her stance on the issue on the very day United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) chief Karen Landgren took up her controversial statement (about reviewing the CPA to allow Nepal Army to purchase weapons and ammunitions and start its recruitment drive to fill vacant positions) in a meeting with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal.
In the meeting, the UNMIN chief expressed her concern about the Defense Minister’s statement and said CPA must be implemented at all cost.
Stating that the peace process might be extended, Minister Bhandari claimed that some of the points in the CPA have adversely affected NA’s efficiency.
“Nepal Army is a national army,” Minister Bhandari added. “It can not be compared with the temporary Maoist combatants.” Nepalnews.com
