Nepali Congress (NC) Central Working Committee (CWC) did not finalise the amendment draft of the party statute before the Mahasamiti meeting, slated to begin Sunday, after CWC members failed to reach consensus.
The CWC has decided to table the dispute at the Mahasamiti meeting for discussion. A CWC meeting held Saturday, one day before the beginning of the Mahasamiti meeting, failed to finalise the draft after some CWC members including acting president Sushil Koirala were adamant on their stance that the party President should be given authority to appoint some of the office bearers in the new statute.
Most CWC members are for electing all the office bearers through election and making the president a ceremonial figure.
NC Mahasamiti meeting is beginning Sunday in Kathmandu. The Mahasamiti meeting was called despite vehement opposition from party president Girija Prasad Koirala, to finalise the party's amended statute and clarify its position on some key issues of the new constitution.
NC is preparing to transform itself to a multi-post leadership model scrapping the presidential model it had been following since decades ever since its inception more than fifty years ago. The statute will be tabled at the general convention next year for final approval. nepalnews.com
