The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR-N) has called the government, cadres of Unified CPN (Maoist) and other political parties to ensure the protection of human rights of all individuals during the agitation called by the Maoists.

Issuing a press statement Tuesday, OHCHR-N said, the Office calls on the Maoist leadership to ensure their cadres respect the rights of others during their protests, not resort to any form of violence and maintain the highest regard to the rule of law.

"Emergency services, humanitarian actors and human rights monitors should be ensured free passage at all times," the international rights watchdog said.

It has also called the government to uphold its international obligations and ensure the security forces act with restraint and respect the rights of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

"I urge the Government of Nepal, the Maoist leadership and all other political actors to exercise restraint in response to nationwide agitation. Organisers of the protests should ensure that protestors act peacefully and within the law", said OHCHR-Nepal Deputy Representative Jyoti Sanghera. nepalnews.com

Pant,Dibakar,In the US  - Creating a terror vide agitation is violation of H   |75.168.190.xxx |2009-11-04 00:17:08
To the very extent the so called agitation itself is a threat to Human Rights
since it has created terror among general people and blocade their normal
life.Since OHCHR in Nepal is almost found ineffective in protecting human rights
of the people, that's why its objective is failed. So,it might be better to office
like OHCHR not advise as such that international human rights stabdards must be
maintained during agitation.Closing of office like is most sought since Nepal
has own watch dog with consutional status.Double standard and controversial role
of UNMIN and OHCHR have made headached to Nepali people and its national
interest.Jay Nepal !
