| Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachhedhar |
Dy PM Gachhedhar, who also serves as Minister for Physical Planning and Works in the current government, on Friday made his mood about the protracted problem clear by saying that a minority has never succeeded in stopping the budget from being passed in the history of the parliamentary system.
Speaking briefly to media-persons at Biratnagar Airport before heading to a party programme in Jhumka of Sunsari, he said that the House Speaker needs to listen to the "majority" in the parliament to give a way out to the current political impasse.
Gacchedhar said that the Speaker listened to the minority till now out of respect, "but now is the turn to listen to the majority".
Stating that the Maoists have laid bare their "undemocratic character" by not allowing the House to resume to give a passage to the budget, he said the Parliament will soon resume normal business and pass the budget.
Gachhedhar also urged the Maoists to play a role of a responsible opposition party and prove its democratic credentials.
He claimed the Madhav Kumar Nepal government is a national government having support of the 22 parties with mandate of 60 percent of the people and called on the Maoists to join it.
The essential services related to health, security, education, among others, is likely to come into a complete halt if the budget for current fiscal year is not approved soon.
Earlier this week, Finance Minister Surendra Pandey said most government bodies will not be able pay their staff and meet their daily expenditure if the budget is not passed soon.
Important government offices in Banke have also fallen short of budget due to the failure to pass the annual budget from the parliament. Nepalnews.com
