In a meeting with deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister Sujata Koirala, Wednesday, the Chinese delegation led by the executive deputy chairperson of Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) Hao Peng agreed to construct a new building for the Nepali consulate in Lhasa as the old one is dilapidated.
Likewise, the Chinese delegation has pledged assistance on food distribution in the western mountainous districts which face food shortage every year.
It has decided to provide Rs 20.4 million for the construction of the consulate building and Rs 30.6 million for food assistance. The visiting TAR delegation has also agreed to allow the use of its highways to ferry food to the north-western districts.
The Chinese delegation has also agreed to construct a 20 MW hydro electric project in far western Nepal. It has asked the officials of energy ministry to prepare a proposal with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project and submit it through the finance ministry.
According to an unofficial agreement, China has agreed to construct the hydro-plant entirely on its own cost, while the Nepal government will be responsible for acquiring and providing land for the project at its own cost and waive custom and other taxes for material required in the construction.
