Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood on Wednesday clarified that the long-standing Bhutanese refugee problem is a bilateral issue between Nepal and India which the two countries should resolve mutually and that India will not intervene in the matter.
Speaking to media-persons after inaugurating a building of a local school in Lakhanpur of Jhapa for which India had extended financial assistance, ambassador Sood said that the Bhutanese refugee problem is very much on the way of being resolved thanks to the third country resettlement option.
He said one-fourth of the total Bhutanese refugee living in seven camps in Jhapa have already been resettled in various countries including America where 25,000 of them have now found home.
The Indian ambassador further said that Indian mediation is not required for repatriation of Bhutanese refugee in their country as it is a bilateral issue to be sorted out between Nepal and Bhutan and that his country won't play any role in it.
He however assured that the refugee problem will sort out itself with time.
Over 1 lakh Nepali speaking ethnic Bhutanese were forcefully evicted from their own country by the Druk regime in Bhutan more than a decade and half ago. nepalnews.com
