Constituent Assembly (CA) members expressed contrasting views on the basis for carving out federalism under the new constitution during Wednesday's CA debate.

Maoist CA members alleged Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) of opposing federalism at the instruction of the Nepal Army.

Participating in the debate, Maoist leader Hishila Yami claimed the two ruling parties are acting under pressure from army honchos to oppose federalism based on ethnicity.

Yami said ethnicity-based federalism is the most scientific way that will bolster national unity and national sovereignty. She added, "It will not disintegrate nation."

Nepali Congress vice president Prakash Man Singh said the 14-state federalism has been proposed without scientific basis. He demanded the formation of a state restructuring commission as provisioned by the interim constitution to draw names and number of states in the federal Nepal.

Other CA members participating in the debate also opposed the federalism based on ethnicity and the number of states proposed saying this might invite conflict among the ethnic groups.

Many said only a few ethnic groups have been given advantage of naming states based on their ethnicity while many others are neglected. nepalnews.com

the known as Madeshi state came from? There was no any name as Madeshi in
Nepal`s geographically even when in the time of 24 Kingdom systems before the

How can you say ethnic base feralism is scientifically bloster the national
unity? Other nation is moving forward while Nepal is going backword. I hate
maoist. There is only one ethnic and that is Asian. And there is only one race
and that is Nepali. This is what going to unit nationalism and National
sovereignty "Nepali". Unnecessary debates and nonsense agenda is
wasting time and money and brigning economic and developement down to wire. If
king can give up country for national interest, why can't maoist show some
compromise to bring forever peace and development of country? Who is being
protray bad guy here...king or maoist? Maoist better take time to rethink else
they will be history soon.

No, Mrs. Yami,
don't do politics to get chaep popularity to get support from
the ethnic groups. Rather think on long term. make federal state equal for all
and name them based on geographical icons.

the rich should sacrifice for the development of the poor for the development of
the nation on the whole...so developed ethinic communities should give the
oppressed communities by the royal corrupt regime a chance to boost themselves
up..this is the only way to make nepal developed and new nepal.we are changing
nepal so should the mind-set of the people.the rich have every thing let them
sacrifice something and forgive for the betterment of the nation..this will not
split a country instead it will sthrenthen it as the quata system in india for
the backward cles has not split the people instead developed the people as
whole.so its time for the old out-dated Congress and UML leaders to revise their
mind-set in accordance to the fast changing world.!
