US ambassador-nominee to Nepal Scott H. DeLisi has urged Nepal's political parties to exercise "strong leadership" and "judicious flexibility" to reach consensus on key elements of the peace process, and said US can offer support for logical conclusion of the peace process and timely drafting of the constitution.
During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in US capital Washington D.C., he said stability (in Nepal) will come only with successful completion of Nepal's peace process.
"I would encourage Nepal's political parties to exercise strong leadership and judicious flexibility to reach consensus on key elements of the peace process," the Kathmandu Post quoted DeLisi as saying.
He further said US is ready to offer its assistance to Nepal in the areas of economic growth, health, climate change, and food security in particular.
DeLisi also said that Nepal and United States enjoy long-standing relationship and the "friendship (between the two countries) is more important now than ever as Nepal confronts multiple challenges."
He also expressed US concern towards the existing culture of impunity in Nepal regarding human rights abuses and said he would work closely with Nepal's political leaders to end it.
A career diplomat, DeLisi has served in the United Nations mission in South Asian capitals of Islamabad and Colombo and headed the Nepal desk at the State Department in Washington D.C. nepalnews.com
