The discharge of Maoist combatants, who failed to get through the second round of verification carried out by the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), concluded Monday with the discharge of 283 disqualified combatants from the fifth division of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) located in Dahaban of Rolpa.
Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, UNMIN chief Karin Landgren, PLA commander Nanda Kishor Pun, PLA deputy commander Chandra Prakash Khanal, representatives of the government and envoys of countries supporting Nepal's peace process were present at the discharge ceremony in Dahaban.
Though there were 452 disqualified combatants at the fifth division only 283 combatants participated in the formal discharge ceremony.
4008 PLA men were disqualified in the UNMIN verification, but little more than half of that number participated in the official discharge programme which started from Dudhauli, SIndhuli.
After the discharge of the disqualified combatants there are now about 19000 PLA combatants staying in seven main cantonment sites and 21 satellite camps across the country.
Meanwhile, addressing the discharge ceremony in Dahaban, Maoist chairman Dahal said his party would fully abide by the peace accord in order to bring the peace process to a conclusion and that the discharge of the disqualified PLA members is a proof of the party's commitment. nepalnews.com
