Speaking at an interaction programme organized at the Reporters' Club in Kathmandu Monday, he said the death toll has been rising because patients afflicted with diarrhea have stayed in their homes instead of visiting the nearest health camps for treatment.
Minister Chaudhary also said the fight against the diarrhea epidemic has been largely won in the areas where the government run health camps have reached. He, however, admitted that the government health workers have not been able to reach remote villages where the disease has spread most widely and said that in these places the most number of deaths has occurred.
Talking about the special relief package for patients afflicted with diarrhea, he said the package includes programmes like supply of safe-drinking water, construction of toilets and free distribution of food in the diarrhea-hit areas.
He also refuted reports that the government health workers are returning from the diarrhea-hit areas for fears of contracting the disease and leaving the health posts virtually without any manpower.
"Although the team of health workers deployed by non-governmental organizations are returning, the government health teams are not leaving the affected areas," he assured.
The diarrhea epidemic has already claimed over 200 lives in mid and far-western districts of the country. nepalnews.com
