Entrepreneurs on Sunday urged the government to come up with a comprehensive law for Intellectual property Rights (IPRs) to promote the growth of export sector.

They also voiced concern over poor enforcement of Patent, Design and Trade-Mark Act, 1965 and the Copyrights Act 2002, the two laws dealing with IPR.

Anup Bahadur Malla, coordinator of Export Promotion Forum (EPF) of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) underscored the need for strong laws and effective enforcement agencies to curb the rampant problem of piracy in Nepali market.

He also proposed that the Copyrights Registrar Office (CRO) and Trademark Registration Office (TRO) should be merged. CRO and TRO are under the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Industry, respectively.

Malla also said that collective action can enhance the export of Nepali services.

Nepal has six services - information technology, health care, education, tourism, engineering, and migrant workers - and 12 goods having the potential for export.

According to International Trade Center (ITC), Nepal exported services worth $650 million in 2008 and the tourism sector had a 15 percent share in it. nepalnews.com
